Meet the Instructor

Melisa Weaver believes that searching for truth through conversation is one of the great pleasures of life. She was first introduced to Socratic Circles through training provided by a tutor from a classical college. After experiencing the amazing benefits derived from this form of conversation, she has gone on to lead Socratic Circle trainings for multiple groups around the country. Formally educated in classical music—voice performance, Melisa has served as the director of worship in 3 churches, and taught voice lessons both in her private studio and in a partnership program with a private school. She has homeschooled her three children through high school while serving in various roles with Classical Conversations over the last 13 years. She has tutored almost all levels of the Classical Conversations Classroom experience, and has been a Support Representative, Area Representative, Sales Manager, and Practicum Speaker.

Western Music and Music Philosophy - Session 1

Description: All of us interact with music daily, whether passively when we hear music at stores and restaurants or actively listening to or playing music.  This course is designed to help you explore the history of musical compositions and the ideas mankind has had concerning music itself. What is it? Where did it come from? And what is mankind's "right" relationship to music? Participants will be given access to an online platform to read about musical developments, listen to music examples of each period, and download source material to read from each period. Meetings will contain additional presented information, after which we will discuss the philosophies encountered and their implications for our music consumption in modernity.
